An air of impending crisis filled the speeches of 17 prominent U.S. politicians from across the political spectrum at a forum on bipartisanship at the University of Oklahoma Monday.
America is in danger. Our ability to meet and solve the problems that face us is seriously compromised. National surveys reveal that an unprecedented seven out of ten citizens believe that life for their children will not be as good as their own. We are headed in the wrong direction. We share their deep concern and frustration. Our nation is indeed at risk.
Thus began a joint statement, titled “A Nonpartisan Appeal to a Nation at Risk,” from politicians including several former senators and governors and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
The United States’ peril today is comparable to the troubles that faced the nation in the time of Lincoln, the Second World War and the drafting of the Constitution, said the participants as they answered questions from the media. According to Angus King, former governor of Maine, the U.S. is experiencing a crisis like World War ii in slow motion.
